What is a Breast Lift?
A Mastopexy, or Breast Lift, refers to a procedure designed to tighten and elevate the breasts by the removal of excess skin which has become stretched over time for a number of reasons. The nipple and the areola remains attached to the breast tissue to maintain viability and sensetivity. With removal of excess skin sometime breast parenchyma is reomved followed by designing different flaps that are approximated to achieve a more ideal shape and contour. There are multiple surgical techniques that may be implemented during the surgery that will be discussed by Dr. Kalantarian for optimal results. Dr. Kalantarian has received extensive training and experience with breast lift procedures and can help you achieve firmer and uplifted breasts with a more attractive shape.

What is the difference between a breast lift and a breast augmentation?
Breast augmentation increases (or augments) breast size or vlume without any breast lift (there is no sagginess and no need for a lift in these patients) with improvement of shape. A breast lift is performed when the patient is unhappy about large nipples, breast asymmetry, or loose, sagging breasts. A good test for whether the patient is a good candidate for a breast lift is to notice which direction the nipples point, if they point downward then a breast lift is in order. The position of the nipple and areola in relation to the breast fold (IMF, line where the breast meets the chest wall). For people who are unhappy with both breast size and shape it may be optimal to speak Dr. K Plastic Surgeon in Orange County about receiving both a breast lift and augmentation at the same time.
How is a Breast Lift or Mastopexy Procedure Performed?
When getting a breast augmentation with a lift, the nipple is kept attached to the breast tissue but repositioned at a higher, more central place. The size of the areola will also be reduced, if desired. There are different types of lift as described below. A crescent breast lift, removes a crescent piece of skin from top of the areola and scar is limited to only the top of the areola. A donut mastopexy removes the skin around the circumference of the areola and usually reduces the size of the areola with repositioning of the nipple areola in a higher position. A vertical mastopexy makes an incision around the areola with a line going down the center of the breast, and is commonly described as a “lollipop scar”. For severe sagging of the breast, in addition to the “lollipop scar” it will also be necessary to make an incision underneath the breasts. A breast lift and augmentation generally takes 2 to 3 hours to complete. Please, refer to the view our procedures in 3D if you wish to see how the procedure is done.

The pain medication that you are prescribed will relieve the pain once you get home. We recommend some one to be with you for the first 24 -48 hours of the recovery. Strenuous activity is forbidden for at least a month following the surgery. You may call your doctor if you have any questions or concerns after your surgery. To prevent the recurrence of sagging, patients are encouraged to continue wearing a supportive bra as frequently as possible in the future.
